Rivalries between players have existed since the high score
was recorded on the 8 bit machines. Your “ol man” would probably never expect
the e-sport arena to grow as big as it has now.
Competitive gaming has existed since the 70’s with games
such as Space Invaders, Pacman and Pong. With the introduction of the
accessible internet and better hardware in the 90’s multiplayer began taking its
hold.
In the early 2000’s, the world started to link up with broadband internet and Net/Lan Cafes were beginning to pop up. This would create the spike which would carry Competitive gaming to the world stage – (pun intended). Games released orientated to multiplayer took to the masses and spectators would come to watch the best. Most of us would remember the early days of CS 1.6 and DOTA Allstars as a mod for Warcraft 3.
South Korea began televising competitive gaming with Starcraft and Warcraft. Gaming as a spectator sport would spread overseas. Sponsorships and audiences would grow the industry to the behemoth it is today…. And it’s expected to keep growing.
